Pharmacogenomic Testing

Shier Private Practice offers pharmacogenomic testing for individuals receiving psychiatric medications. Pharmacogenomics is a relatively new field which combines the study of pharmacology and genetics to provide individualized medication options tailored to a person’s genetic makeup. This specialized form of genetic testing attempts to reduce polypharmacy and predict which medications will be the most effectively metabolized with the least negative side effects.

The procedure is non-invasive and easy to perform. Patients are provided with 2 cotton swabs to swirl on the inside of each cheek. The swabs are then sent to a laboratory where the sample of cells from the swabs are extracted to perform the DNA analysis. The final report is generally available after 1-2 weeks. If you have a documented history of unsuccessful medication trials, your insurance company may cover the cost of the test.
